forestlodgetrees @ State Cabinet Meeting

When State Cabinet came to Leichhardt Town Hall on 20 November 2006 representatives of the forestlodgetrees community group and the Owners’ Corporation at 77 Hereford St met with Tony Kelly MLC, Minister for Lands and Sandra Nori MP, Member for Port Jackson, to discuss the future of the Crown land at 9 Alfred Rd (at rear of 77 Hereford St). This was a very welcome opportunity to discuss the matter face to face with the Ministers.

Our representatives delivered a petition to Minister Kelly containing 209 signatures collected over a period of only 7 days from 12 to 19 November. The petitioners included Verity Firth, City of Sydney Councillor and Labor Candidate for Balmain. The petitioners requested that Minister Kelly vest the Crown land in Council, as the Minister for Lands has power to do under the Crown Lands Act 1989, with Council undertaking the long-term care and management of the land as public open space for the benefit of the community.

Immediately following the Cabinet meeting, Minister Kelly visited the Crown land with our representatives and gave generously of his time to discuss the issues concerning the land.

We are hopeful that this will now progress the matter.

The Glebe Society Bulletin includes following update on campaign

The forestlodgetrees group received a letter from the Lord Mayor, Clover Moore MP, dated 12 October, which confirmed her opposition to the State Government's plans to sell off parkland at 9 Alfred Road. The Lord Mayor is concerned about the Government's selling of public land and gave details of the Council's recent large investments in public land in the Glebe area. The group very much appreciates this, but continues to work towards this particular piece of land remaining so, as a pocket park complete with mature native trees. The Lord Mayor states in her letter that ratepayers' money should not be spent to re-buy public land. If only the State Government would agree with this and present the land to Council for the benefit of the public.
